'Hasui's Dream'

I had some trouble capturing the detail of this one with the digital camera, hence the smaller image underneath. I fell in love with this print by Kawase Hasui, bought from the Freer gallery in DC. Falling asleep one night, I saw distance between an eye and its eyelid and imagined water between them. Hasui's boat and its fisherman now float in the calm warmth of the eye's lake.

'Catch 2.2'

Well it has been a year, but I'm back with my first oil-painting in DC.
I recently enjoyed this quote from John Lennon, confirming what I long suspected about great art: "
We've learned over the years that if we wanted we could write anything that just felt good or sounded good and it didn't necessarily have to have any particular meaning to us. As odd as it seemed to us, reviewers would take it upon themselves to interject their own meanings on our lyrics. Sometimes we sit and read other people's interpretations of our lyrics and think, 'Hey, that's pretty good.' If we liked it, we would keep our mouths shut and just accept the credit as if it was what we meant all along."

Brown Stallion

This one's for my Dad, who loves horses. It's just about acceptable to his highly horse-critical eye!

'The tale of the veridian tusk and the black arm
husk, as told by the water's (sharp) edge'

Okay, so it seems the darker recesses of my imagination
are finding voices here. I love the balance to this: the
yin-yang effect of the arm and tusk, above the almost
swirling backdrop; the central position of the drop of
blood with the flower above and the source of the
ripples an equal distance below.

'Legoland'
Some of the mechanical parts of the flower-head were
probably inspired by bits of lego, hence the title (it's
worth clicking on the image for a close-up, to better see
the tiny figure walking between the shadow and horizon)

I did this for a presentation and informal job-interview in Washington DC. It seemed to help - I'm now working there!
